Data Collection

Data of nine morphology characteristics of 6 Prickly Ash varieties in location Xian and Cheng(both in Shaanxi Province, China) was collected. They are basal leaves length, basal leaves width, top leaves length, top leaves width, leaf stipe length, rachils length, fruit diameter, fruit stipe length, fat percentage. In the midterm of October 2007, when the prickly ash were ripen, for each variety 30 plants were randomly selected to collect the data. For each plant 20 leaves and seeds were measured and average value was used to represent the morphology characteristics. This process was with the help of local experts and experienced farmers, to ensure the reliability of these selected plants.

For fat percentage, 10g ripen seeds of each plant were analysed. First soak these seeds in 100ml water, and then distill with water vapour. To prevent the loss of volatile components of the larger, steamed liquid directly passed into 50ml chloroform. When distilled liquid reached 200 ml stop the distillation. Stir up recycling bottles, put aside the distillation liquid in separatory funnel, and separate the chloroform layer. Aqueous phase was extracted with 20 ml chloroform each time, till non-volatile oil. Divide the volatile oil weight by 10g then it was the fat percentage
